I bet there are some of you out there who, like me, are still savouring those special moments from last Friday afternoon’s event. Such as:
- Jamila Rizvi offering her translation of the phrase “I’m just lucky”. When women say it, what we really mean is: “Please don’t hate me because I’m good at what I do”
- Leanne Pilkington, on the one time she actually had to campaign for her REI Board position: “The poor guy didn’t even get a vote!”
- The ever-modest Jacquie Love, on how she’s applying her unique skills to social enterprise and changing the world (but she’s not a real entrepreneur)
- Clare Ryan on how to make each person in your network feel special – which sometimes means introducing the not so special ones to each other and getting them out of your way.
There was definitely something in the air on Friday. It was our biggest event yet and all members of our steering committee were thrilled by your responses on the day. You loved the venue, the gift of Jamila’s book, our special guests and the good company of your colleagues and friends.
What I noticed, in particular, was the number of men in the room, and how engaged they were in the messages delivered by our guests. It is so important that men are part of these conversations, taking them back to the workplaces they are so often leading, not to mention their families, which hold the next generation of women leaders.
